Book Recommender

👤 Accounts

Sign up / log in with the button in the top-right corner. Usernames are 2–32 characters, passwords at least 6.
Your library follows your account, so it's the same on your phone and your laptop. You stay signed in on a device until you log out.
You can search and use Find Similar without an account — but saving, rating, sections and recommendations need one. If you click Save to Library while signed out, the login box opens for you.
Once you're signed in, the app opens straight into My Library.
Forgot your username or password? Email us from the login box and we'll sort it out.

🔍 Searching for books

Pick a tab first — Title, Author or Genre — then type and press Search. Genre accepts loose terms like "cozy mystery" or "space opera".
Published between narrows results to a year range. Leave either box blank for an open-ended range, or both blank for all years.
Results are grouped by genre (each group is tinted by its genre) and numbered by rank. Use the page buttons at the bottom for more results.
The % badge on a card is how strongly that book matched — green is a strong match, amber medium, grey weak.
Click any card to expand it: cover art, the full description, action buttons, and links out to Google Books, Open Library, and a "Find Online" web search.

💾 Saving books to your library

Expand a book and click Save to Library. Saved books are what your recommendations are built from.
Open the My Library tab (far right) to see everything you saved. The switcher at the top flips between Saved, Liked and Disliked.
Remove on a saved book deletes it from your library and from any sections it was in. In the Liked/Disliked views, Remove just clears that rating.

📖 Reading status

Every saved book has a Status… dropdown: 📥 Want to Read, 📖 Reading, or ✅ Read. A book has one status at a time; pick No status to clear it.
The amber chips at the top of your library filter to each status, with a live count.
With a status chip open, the recommend button becomes Get Recommendations from "Reading" Books — a quick way to say "more like what I'm reading right now".

🗂️ Sections (your own shelves)

Click + New Section in your library and name it (e.g. "Sci-fi favorites"). A book can live in several sections at once.
In All Books, use the Add to section… dropdown on a book. Sections it's already in show a ✓.
With a section open, that dropdown becomes Move to section… (moves the book out of this one), and each card gains a Remove from "…" button.
Rename and Delete chips appear next to the section bar while a section is open. Deleting a section never deletes books — they stay in All Books.

✨ Getting recommendations

Whole library: in All Books, click Get Recommendations Based on My Library.
One section: open the section first — the button rescopes to just those books.
One reading status: open a status chip and use the same button.
A hand-picked set: tick the checkbox on any saved books; a Get Recommendations from N Selected Books bar appears. Best when your library spans moods and you want one of them.
Recommendations never include books already in your library or ones you've disliked — even when you scope to a single section.
← Back to My Library returns you to where you were.
Few or no results usually means the source books have thin metadata, or your scope is very small. Save a few more books in that genre and retry.

🔗 Find Similar

Every book card — in search results, your library, or a recommendation list — has a Find Similar button that finds books like that one specific title. No account needed.
It's a one-book lookup, so unlike recommendations it ignores the rest of your library.
If a book has almost no description or genre data (common with webnovels and self-published serials), you'll get an honest empty result rather than unrelated books.

👍 👎 Teaching it your taste

👍 tells it you want more books like this one; 👎 suppresses that kind of book and keeps it out of your results.
Click the same thumb again to undo the rating. Rated books show up under the Liked and Disliked views in your library.
You can rate a book without saving it — handy for pruning recommendations you don't want to see again.

🎨 Display & troubleshooting

The ☀️ / 🌙 button toggles light and dark mode; your choice is remembered on that device.
Recommendations are computed live from Google Books and Open Library, so the first run after changing your library takes a few seconds. Repeat runs are cached and near-instant.
Book data (covers, descriptions, genres) comes from those two providers — if a book looks sparse or mislabelled, that's usually the source data.
